The mono stringer staircase, also known as a floating staircase, is quickly becoming one of the most popular staircases for the interior of new residential builds, as well as in older homes going through renovations. This is because of the modern design feature it brings to a room and home.
The purpose of the staircase is to bring a superior flow of light into a room, and as well in cases where a L-shaped set of stairs can be installed, one can add space to a room. If you are considering options and are wanting a modern stair, then the mono stringer is a trending option to take a closer look at.
The term mono stringer refers to a single beam of metal that supports the stair threads from underneath, being attached to the center of the thread.
Mono stringers can be fabricated out of metal, or wood. At Victoria Stairs, we're about only fabricating metal staircases. With metal, we have more options for design, texture, aesthetics, and durability.
Some of these features can be customized in ways that wood cannot be. One of our favorites is called powder-coating. This is a dry finishing process created by applying an electric charge to the metal that causes a dry powder to fuse to the surface of the metal.
The final process is to bake the powder coated metal in a curing oven in order to achieve a smooth, even coating. This finish is harder than conventional paint, making it tougher and more durable. And the choice of colors is essentially unlimited. Every and any color of the rainbow can be an option when it comes to the powder used on any single or multiple unit projects.
When we have clients looking at this type of step as an option for their design, some of the questions we get are regarding the structural components of a mono-stringer staircase. This includes wanting to know about the thickness of the steps, and the stringer. Both questions are important bits of information to know when looking at the potential placing of a staircase at the beginning of the design process.
One of the things that makes metal mono stringer staircases the choice of product over a wooden mono stringer staircase, is the thickness (or lack thereof) of the metal treads versus the thickness of wooden treads.
Now there will always be exceptions to any rule, but back when we started the company, our research showed us that more times than not the wooden tread will be 9.5 cm (3.75”) thick. The stringer will have a thickness ranging somewhere between 10.8 cm – 13.4 cm (4.25”-5.25”), based on the need for the required support of the weight of the treads.
With a metal single stringer staircase, because of the strength of the choices of metals we employ, the metal structural components will be different. The metal treads are much thinner, allowing more light to flow through a room. As well the single stringer beam does not have to rely on being bulky like a timber beam must be.
However, again with powder coating, we can make a metal tread appear to be a wood tread so if you're intent on the look of a wood finish, we can deliver that.
As well the weight of a metal mono stringer staircase is much less than that of the wooden counterpart. Employing technologies such as CNC plasma cutters gives us a huge edge with this and so many other features.
When it comes to the cost of designing, custom fabricating, and installing our mono stringer staircase, we take in many factors. Mono stringer floating stairs start at around $7500 for a simple staircase and can range up to $30,000 or more. This is all dependant on the level of customization, as well as the choice of a variety of finish
